These skills labs serve as a multi-function learning environment that allows students to practice procedural skills and conduct complex patient scenarios using manikins or Standardized Patients (actors trained to play the role of a patient). This learning space is equipped with six exam tables, bedside laptops, and space to work with task trainers. The use of Standardized Patients enhances students’ experiences and fosters learning.
Four exam rooms replicate the out-patient office setting, and are designed to teach and evaluate students’ history taking, physical examination, and communication skills using Standardized Patients.
These rooms replicate a typical hospital room and can be adapted for hospitalized adults or children. Each room is equipped with the most current medical technologies and Human Patient Simulators, including both adult and pediatric manikins, to prepare students to provide safe and competent care in the hospital setting.
Customized to prepare midwifery and nursing students to practice caring for the laboring woman and her newborn, this suite is equipped with a manikin that gives birth and a newborn manikin. View the video below on your mobile phone for a 360 view of the Labor and Deliver Suite.
Here our nurse anesthetist students practice essential anesthesia skills including critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and crisis management. Students learn using our most advanced Human Patient Simulator that interfaces with real clinical monitors and anesthesia machines and responds to the administration of anesthetic gases and medications.
This simulated space allows for students to strengthen their communication skills. Scenarios conducting in this room include interviewing patients, delivering bad news, and counseling patients with psychiatric disorders.
Debriefing is an integral part of simulation. Here, students and faculty reflect on the simulation practice to explore, analyze, and synthesize the students’ actions and thought processes with the goal of improving performance in real-world situations. These rooms have the ability to play back video recorded from any simulation space in the center and also serve as a waiting area for students to watch simulations in real-time.
